Process Reflection

New English110 class,

Do not be discouraged when you learn that this class is about science fiction! That is if you are as shocked as I was when I started this class, I hated scifi. It is actually not as bad as you would imagine! The best advice I can give you would be, to read, read and read some more, and when you feel like you have read enough- you probably still have a few pages left to read.- LOL I know at the beginning I thought I would just skim through all the common place university chapters and get the gist of it, rather than reading through everything. Bad idea!!! I ended up going back and reading everything anyways because I was so lost when the class was talking about the different steps common place asks you to take. I guess Leslie didn't give us homework just because she thought we needed something to do once we got home, no.... we really did need to know it all. I thought this class was going to be a breeze! But, it really was academically challenging, and not to the point where I was exhausted, but definitely a good challenge.
So I if you only remember one thing from this post, then you probably didnt read the whole thing, so go back and read it all- remember I said to read, read and read some more...... Thats english 110, good luck!

Farscape

I really liked the beginning of the show! When the older man was telling his son that he was proud of him and that he would make his own story in life, then he gave him his lucky ring.... How sentimental right?!!! Then when he got morphed into that crazy magnetic field that pulled him far into space, was alittle wild, but still cool! And then..... the weird aliens had to be brought into the storyline, there were humans to, atleast people that looked human- i dont think they were from earth though.-

I really like the scifi shows that dont go sooo beyond reality, like crazy alien life forms with hair that moves all by itself and looks like rubber. I mean alittle bit of unrealistic stuff is interesting, like STNG how they have real people whether they are red, orange or green, maybe even look like cyclopes or droids, but they are still in human form. Not unknown alien creatures that look somewhat childish, to me. The biggest difference I noticed was between this show and all the rest is how they started from earth and as you could imagine made it seem more real. Especially how the guy was working for NASA. No other science fiction that I have seen has incorporated this into the plot.

STNG: “The Measure of a Man”

I really liked this episode! It shows how close Captain Picard and Data are, and how they view each others friendship. Also how Commander Riker feels as if he has betrayed both Captain Picard and Data by representing the prosecution, that is until Data explains to Riker how he is grateful for Riker's actions because without him he would have lost the judgment by default.

STNG was easier to relate to because not only did it incorperate a female in charge (the judge), but also how they were all laid back and just having fun while playing cards. Although I'm not sure how much I liked how everything took place on the ship, rather than exploring another planet. How many episodes can you possibly watch when all the action is confined to the inside of a spaceship?

WB Post 4- Star Trek

I watched episode 24 called This side of paradise. It actually got straight to the storyline and was pretty good, it showed different sides of the characters that I may have not have known otherwise. This particular episode takes place on a planet called Omarcron Sandy 3, it a federation colony led by a man named Elias Sandoval. When the crew lands on this planet they find that everyone is in perfect health, but they should not be alive because the planet is contaminated with a deadly form of radiation. Captain Kirk order that a small crew go to investigate which included himself, Dr. McCoy, Mr. Spock, and Mr. Sulu. Shortly after arrival they find that there are no living animals on the farms or any other living thing for that matter other than these seemingly healthy humans. Elias Sandoval explains to Captain Kirk and his crew that the philosophy of Omarcron Sandy 3 is "Men should resort back to a more simple life," he gives several examples such as no vehicles or weapons allowed only harmony. After Elias is finished explaining the perfections of this planet ( good climate, perfect amounts of rain), a female named Leila appears from another room and locks eyes with Mr. Spock. She mentions that they had met 6 years prior on earth, but no other explanation is spoke of yet, until.... Leila takes Mr.Spock to show him how the colony has survived. As they arrive at the site of were the spores are growing, Mr Spock is suddenly sprayed by the spore and becomes enlightened with happiness, emotions and tells Leila that he loves her. Captain Kirk finds Mr. Spock smiling, laughing and hanging from a tree in the pasture and realizes something very wrong has happened. Eventually a spore is taken on board of the ship and infects the entire crew, leaving Captain Kirk to figure out how to get his crew to overcome the effects of the spore. It doesn't take long for him to realize that anger or any form of strong emotions will rid them of this "happy pill" as Mr. Spock calls it. As he gets crew members one at a time to come back to reality, Mr. Spock is left to tell Leila that he cannot stay with her because he has responsibilities on the ship and cannot stay with her. The crew comes back on board and they leave the paradise behind.....

My comparison will be with the New Star Trek movie, since I have just finished watching it as well. I believe the biggest change in science fiction and movies alike, are how the subjects have continued to change to be more timely. For instance, a decade or more ago people were more interested in aliens and how futuristic all the gadgets and spaceships could be, because everyone believed this was a real futuristic possibility. People now a days are still interested in those same things to only a minor degree, but rather the story lines and how well they can relate to a topic -in a futuristic way- is more important. I believe it is mainly due to how in science fiction the world should have already had flying cars, and a robot maids like the Jetson's had. In the New Star Trek movie we were able to relate to it more easily because it brought in family, fear disappointment and success, but also included the cool fight scenes, romance and of course crazy new weapons and technology.

BSG

Well, I'm not really sure where to begin........ I thought the show was pretty boring, what was all the sex scenes about? They were a bit much for me. I was a little confused because there was so much going on and I had no back ground information to help me understand exactly where all this was coming from. But my dad told me this show (the original) is where we got the name for my first dog as a child "Starbuck," which I never knew until I had to watch the show for class.

My favorite poem

A Word to Husbands by Ogden Nash

To keep your marriage brimming with love in the loving cup,
Whenever you’re wrong, admit it;Whenever you’re right, shut up.

Even though this poem is short, It says everything we need to know -and it's funny.-
I tell my husband this all the time, when im right and he's wrong I gloat all day and keep reminding him just incase he forgot that I was right (im usually not the one whose right, so when I am, I live it up). But on the other hand no woman likes to hear when she's wrong, atleast not this one;0)

Normal Again

I really liked this episode! It made me sit and really think for a minute, whether Buffy was really in the hospital or not. Especially when she admitted to Willow that she had been in one before. I never realized how close the two of them were until Willow seemed surprised that there was something about Buffy that she didn't know.
