On a school day Buffy’s mother wakes her up from her dream to tell her it’s time for school. Her mother seems really surprised that not only does Buffy get up right away, But that her daughter is actually excited to go to school. She was looking forward to the weekend so she could spend time with her father whom she rarely gets to see; Since her parents got a divorce over a year ago. What she didn’t know was that some weird things were going to happen that day, for instance, her dad came to her school in the form of a nightmare and told her she was the cause of their divorce. She had been a bad child and if she would have tried harder then things wouldn’t have gotten so bad between him and her mother. I think what is trying to be communicated is that a lot of children experience turmoil when their parents get divorced and tend to believe that it is their fault, being a teenager you already feel insecure within or about yourself. There’s that “I could have done something different to change the outcome” and keep my family together. Maybe she felt torn between her two parents. I believe the writer wanted children to know that this is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.
