Paper dilemma
I can't seem to figure out how to explain what Jacques Lacan describes as the mirror stage, it is as follows,"when infants look in the mirror, and first recognize that they have a self outside of their own self, they will forever seek that unity of self they once had." I am more interested in the part where she says "a self outside of their own self," I just can't seem to describe what this means in a more descriptive way that makes sense, And without making it more than a paragraph or two. Any advice??

It seems like Lacan means that after one sees themself in the mirror, they then realize that they can be percieved in another way besides how they view themselves.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.... I think he means when they look in the mirror they realize they have a visual "self" that they have never seen before.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this sentence, I felt as if it meant that babies looking in the mirror for the first time lets them know that they have an outside appearance and lets them know that they are much smaller and younger than their parents who take care of them and are the only people they probably remember
ReplyDeleteI think that they may only think about their minds. When they look in the mirror they realize they have a physical image also.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Rebecca; I think Lacan was trying to describe the feeling an infant has when they first realize that they're a part of the world. They're so used to observing laerning that I think it may be difficult for them to fathom the idea of contributing to this crazy place they're watching.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rebecca, its like they realize that they are seen as something other than what they see themselves as.
ReplyDeleteThat is a pretty intense statement. What if you actually made your desription of that 1 or 2 paragraphs, if it is a significant quote why can't it be a significant part of your paper.
ReplyDeleteIf you answer that question you answer a something that fundamentally makes us different from most animals. good luck. I think I'd find a different source
ReplyDeleteI definately think that if you use this source and this quote in your paper, you will need to use more than a paragraph to explain it. This is a pretty intense quote and I don't think you can just explain it in just a sentence or two...
ReplyDeleteyou can maybe relate it to an out of body experience, but without it ACTUALLY being outside of the body
ReplyDeleteI think your point about infants seeing themselves for the first time is really interesting. Readers can probably relate to it really well.
ReplyDeleteIt means that when infants come into the world, they first see the motherly figure. But seeing themselves for the first time, it will change the whole perspective and they will realize there is individuality.
